On the front end of the "rollerskate", we began work also installing the Mazdaspeed Miata ABS compatible spindles, and upgraded brakes. While things in the rear were taken apart we also installed the proper axles for an ABS car, along with the ABS spindles from a 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata and Mazdaspeed brakes. These differential housings are designed to break on a rear end collision (and they often do), so we had to take care of that first.

In this update we've got to work on the drivetrain from the donor car, replacing and upgrading suspension and braking components.įirst things first, we needed to replace the broken aluminum differential housing from the 2000 Miata donor car. Stay tuned for more weekly updates as we continue giving this M-Edition a new, enhanced lease on life.

While the car is away getting painted, we'll be starting to replace and install the mechanical parts on the "rollerskate" from the NB donor car. This will allow the car to be able to be pushed around easily, while still allowing us access to all of the engine bay components that will be getting removed. In order to keep the car as a rolling chassis, we decided to keep the suspension intact and only remove the engine, transmission, differential, powerplant frame, driveshaft and axles from it. This step allowed us to closely examine the structure behind the panels to make sure that the car didn't have any spots of a previous accident or repair that was covered up. The doors, fenders, hood, trunk lid and rear finish panel will be removed by the body shop when they're prepping the car for paint. In preparation for paint we've removed the bumpers, mirrors, signal lights, marker lights, taillights and all outside trim from the car.

The seats will be getting a full restoration of their own at a later time. All other parts that were in the way of the areas that need to be painted were removed as well.

While we were in there with the door panels off, we replaced the window bushings and lubricated the window regulators to bring the power windows back to their original intended speed. We'll be replacing these two covers and their hardware, along with a new rain rail when we install a new top on the car. These are a very common issue, that is usually caused by a leaking convertible top rain rail. The only rust we found on the interior was on the metal covers for the fuel pump and fuel hoses. We were pleased to find that it was in very good condition. It's not a common problem area for Miatas, but we wanted to make sure that no water had accumulated in this area and caused issues with rust.

The car is now stripped most of the way, in preparation for paint and it's drivetrain transplant.įirst thing we wanted to check out was the floorpan of the car. To accomplish this integration we'll be borrowing some parts from a Mazdaspeed Miata and a couple other Miata parts cars.įor a more detailed plan of attack and an in-depth video of the project, here is the link to the blog post on our website: From this car we plan on dropping the entire "rollerskate" (both subframes with everything attached to them, 99-00 engine, 6 speed transmission, 3.9 Torsen LSD), and integrating it all in a way that will allow the 95M to look factory under the engine bay and underneath as well. Not satisfied with leaving the drivetrain alone, we purchased a totaled 2000 Special Edition with only 37k miles on it, to use as a donor car. Being a 95M, my personal favorite NA Miata, it was decided that we would restore the car back to original specs on the outside, and (almost) original spec on the inside. However, this particular car did not have a substantial amount of water enter the cabin, and the body was in excellent shape, so we got to thinking about saving it. We purchased this car from an insurance auction, with the damage listed simply as "flood damage", and like most salvage cars we buy, it was destined to be a parts car. We'd like to introduce a new and exciting project we have in the works, a "RestoMod" / Rebuild of a 95 M Edition.
